Horses offering a helping hoof...

The therapeutic benefits of horses to humans have been known for a many years – the wise man, Winston Churchill, stated “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of man”. We firmly believe this but we also aim to ensure that the man is good for the inside and outside of a horse!
Many of our horses are rescues from other disciplines, or simply been classed as too old to be useful, yet here they are some in their third careers, patiently taking people of all levels for horse back trails and doing therapy work too.
Horses can enrich the lives of all humans, but particularly so for anyone with a disability, be it emotional or physical. Whilst horse riding provides the obvious benefit of physical exercise, participants in equestrian therapy are often enriched in less apparent ways.
The natural movement of the horse improves posture, balance and strengthens core muscles and learning how to control the movements of such a large animal offers an enormous boost to self confidence.
Interacting with horses provides more than just riding skills - participants can also learn companionship, responsibility, confidence, leadership, vocational and educational skills.
Learning to care for the horses needs through handling, grooming and feeding not only teaches responsibility but also helps participants feel they are contributing in a meaningful way to the horses’ well being.
Through our volunteer project we aim to offer children and adults from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to interact with and learn about horses, not only from the sheer “joy factor” of horse riding, education also forms an important part of our program.
In many poor and disadvantaged households, abuse to humans and animals is rife, through the horses participants learn that gentleness is power. Experiencing such a big animal’s response to kindness and respect and their equally immediate reaction to “negative or aggressive energy” is an important part of our program.
We are working on increasing our services within the rural areas around us in the very near future. For more information please contact us on info @ horseabout. co. za
